The march to Pedalshift 100
I have something special lined up for episode 100. We’ll have friends of the show as special guests and we’ll chat all about the usual nonsense. But but but… there’s more. We’re doing a joint meet up slash holiday spectacular live and in person. Details to be announced in the interview! Details also here.
The Journal
Bicycling Oregon to San Francisco
Check out part 1 for an interview and conversation with my camping partner, Daniel.
Highlights
- Meeting Daniel
- Elk Prairie Thanksgiving and elk
- Seven Devils
- Dry weather
- Familiarity of the ride
- Humbug Mountain
- My bears outside of Klamath
Lowlights
- Colder than expected
- Knee pain towards the end
- Needed a zero day or two, but really was in the rhythm and wanted to do more
- I’d prefer to stay off sugar when touring, but didn’t
Takeaways
- Fewer changes of clothes; more empty space in bags
- Batteries over dynohubs, cemented
- Extra low gearing makes touring SO much better
- Hills are temporary
- There’s not a lot of time for sidetrips, so make the tour itself the centerpiece
- Eating healthier pays dividends
- Pacing is super important… doing an extra 20 to save it on a harder day following helps a ton.
- Lots of small climbs are much more taxing than a few big ones
