The Pedalshift Project 128: Must-have bicycle tour tools

If you’re going on a bike tour, you’re usually confronted with a situation that requires a fix or an adjustment. On this episode of The Pedalshift Project we explore bicycle tour toolkits: what you must bring, what you should bring, and maybe a few things you haven’t thought about.

Followup

FOTS Preston Piper has another video out on the C&O washout that was a topic of last week’s episode. He reports that a C&O safety officer confirms that the washout detour is being worked on by them and has plans for some gravel and a better crossing over the creek. Amazing news! Go check out the video in last week’s episode

Hwy 1 south of Big Sur is OPEN as of this very moment. Hat tip to Mysterious James for sending me the good news!

Gear Talk: Must-have bicycle tour tools

One of the most ingenious set of tools ever. Since it’s made by Brompton, you know two things: it’s exactly what you need for anything on the bike, and it’s… expensive. Even has tube patches! I use it occasionally for non-Brompton work.

Best part… it fits inside the front frame tube so you always have it. Brilliant, as they say!

Non-Brompton

Multitool
One or two spare tubes
Patchkit
Tire boot
Tire levers
Knock off leatherman
Zipties
Duct tape
Chain lube
Mini crescent wrench (for pedals)
Chain link
Chain link tool remover

What I should bring every time but often don’t
A dedicated rag to wipe my chain down
Spokes or spoke replacement kit
